Gotta JET?

Two years in the fall, while I was working on the Watson, I was also applying to work at the JET Program. The JET Program stands for Japan Exchange and Teaching program. It was government program in which the Japanese government allow foreigners with high English capability to come teach, coach, or assist them in learning, interpreting and translating to English. You can apply for three different positions: Coordinator for International In Gist: you become an assistant language teacher to help Japanese students at any grade level learn English. In exchange of you being an ALT, you will be living in Japan.

Tips to go through the process

  1. Be confident in what you talk about in the interview
  2. Write about the things that you can back up in the interview
  3. Also in the interview, Acknowledge that there are things that you don’t know or you have flaws.
    • Don’t lament or gripe about it
    • The interviewers don’t expect perfection but honesty and integrity.
  4. Go to some local Japanese events or classes could make you seem more well rounded
  5. Having knowledge of TEFL or English Language experience can show you as natural
  6. Being seen as well rounded and balance in your interest of English
  7. Know how to talk about your adaptability in a nice manner

Result: I was alternate listed for my consulate. This means that I have a chance to be upgraded between now and December, but it might not happen. I am kinda surprised that I made it on the list, since I thought I did terrible on my interview.

Update: I was upgraded from the alternate list to the shortlist. So, I’m very happy about this accomplishment. The only downside is that I will be having to get everything together faster than the others.
